I know you might find this shocking but I willingly gave up alcohol for 30 days. Technically I’ve been alcohol free, again by choice, since January 31st which at this post is 32 days…and counting.
Why?
Well, the holidays were libatious. And then I went on vacation January. I came home to realize that I had been drinking almost daily since November. Quiver me liver. So I decided to take a break from the juice.

Now I know what you are wondering, how much weight did I lose as a result of not drinking for a month?
The answer…….ZERO!
Yep. Zero.
Yes after 30 days of martyrdom…ZERO pounds lost.
But here are the top health benefit that I did discover:
- I had less headaches. I get headaches 2-4 times a months. They last for 1-3 days. In the month of January I only had 2, each lasted only two days.
- I slept better. I’m not a great sleeper. I have issues falling asleep and I also wake up to noises during the night. I still had issues with sleep but I did feel more rested most mights.
- My workouts got stronger. I went from an average mph of 18.8 for 45 minutes in cycle class to 22.2 mph. I attribute this to my headaches being less frequent and feeling better rested. I had more to give and was able to build strength.
- I lost inches. My thighs are technically a 1/2 inch thinner and so is my waist.
- I didn’t have one hangover (I randomly get them, sometime from only one glass of wine)
So will I be giving up alcohol forever? No.
I’ve missed red wine.
I really like the taste of red wine. I’ve also missed whiskey. In truth, I’m not a huge drinker but love a good cocktail. My time before going dry was a bit of an anomaly. I rarely drink during the week and if I do it’s a glass of wine with dinner or a drink after work with friends. I don’t do it often either. I typically drink on the weekends and I’m a light weight. 3 drinks and I’m singing and dancing and swaying.
So when will I drink again? I don’t know. Maybe this weekend if I go out with friends? Maybe dinner tomorrow? Or, maybe next week. Like I said I’m not a huge drinker or a daily drinker. I wasn’t vying to open a bottle the minute the clock struck midnight. However, I do love a good cocktail and I’m sure when I have my first libation I’ll enjoy it immensely.

Great job! I’ve noticed I’ve cut down (but not out) significantly due to my accident. And when I do have a beer, I want it to be really good.

Yeah, I was tempted the other night to have a drink when I was a concert. I didn’t because they didn’t have anything I really wanted so I passed and had water.

I’ve been considering doing something like this, as well. Like you, I’m not a frequent drinker, not daily, anyway, and when I do, it’s a glass of wine, a beer, maybe a cocktail. I do have my heavier drinking moments, but they aren’t frequent. What I need to get back into is exercising on a routine basis. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks. I did this when when I only had 2 events planned. I drank club soda and was fine. I did skip a work event so I would not be tempted.

Great job! You motivated me after reading how your workouts had gotten stronger.

It was the one measurable items I tracked and defiantly an unintended consequence. You can totally do this.

Nice! Yeah, I gave up all booze for 21 days. I love all the other benefits like better sleep, more firm skin, etc. Of course I went out on day 22 and got hammered (on a Monday night) and it really hit home how much alcohol affects us…even more so as we eh “advance” in age. haha
