Last month Charlie and I headed to San Francisco for a culinary weekend getaway (a.k.a. mileage run (I need a few miles to make my airline status)). I told Charlie that I really wanted to experience Lazy Bear but with tickets really hard to come by (according to many it is the hottest restaurant and hardest reservation in town) I really didn’t think he would actually make it happen. But the man is well, THE MAN and he came though like a rock star. Charlie found a diner who could no longer make their reservation and bam, Lazy Bear San Francisco was secured.
The restaurant features communal tables and they encourgage mingling and making new friends. I love this because because after spending 48 hours together Charlie and I really don’t have all that much new to talk about. Oh, we also enjoy meeting new people, we are friendly like that.
Dinner, however, began in the danish modern reto cocktail lounge. Your encourage to arrive early to enjoy a beverage or two before dinner. Snacks are served before being seated.
The meal is a progression of seasonal and local ingredients some even foraged by the staff at Lazy Bear. To use Charlie’s words, I was challenged by the food with only two dishes that I really did not enjoy (both of which Charlie loved). Charlie and I both had the wine parings which were excpetional with the dinner.
My favorite savory dish of the night was the velvet egg and sweetbreads. I love the peppery flower petals and the crisp sweet breads. The yolk of the egg was exactly like velvet and the seasoning was spot on.
I also really enjoyed the dessert course. Many times restaurants excel in the savory but flounder with the sweets. The final sweets were extremely well executed. The icecream balls …Wow. Amazing. If they would have put a plate of them in front of me I would have eaten myself sick.
Lazy Bear defiantly lived up to my expectations. A big big big thank you to Charlie for making it happen. He is a rock star!
