A hectic work week coupled with “I’m not in the mood to do dishes” usually lead leads to…”do you want to order Thai food?” And while Pad Thai is super delicious, it is not necessarily healthy, not to mention, I have NO self control when it comes to Pad Thai portions. For people that don’t have time (or don’t want) to cook, local food delivery services are ideal. And luckily for me the the competition in meal delivery services in Chicago is getting stronger.
Cooked Chicago is meal delivery service that offers locally sourced meals that are crafted with care and packaged in sustainable, biodegradable packaging. They offer a rotation of seasonal items from local Midwest farms and, whenever possible, they chose organic. Meals are delivered fresh with reheating instructions and are designed to be hot and ready to eat in minutes
Their local purveyors include:
Chicken: TJ’s Free Range Poultry. Piper City, IL.
Beef: Strauss Farms Grass-Fed Pasture-Raised Beef. Wisconsin.
Pork: Cameron Farms Pork. Lebanon, IN.
Produce: Local Foods
Spices/Herbs: The Spice House
I received my Chicago meals packed in eco-friendly boxes. Items were well packed and there was little shifting of the food in the containers. Items that could possibly get soggy were separated to maintain freshness.
I received 4 meals: . Chickpea Fritters, Chicken Posole, Flank Steak and Turkey Sausage. Overall the meals were flavorful and reheated well. The Chicken Posole was my favorite. It had great flavors and could have fed two people. I also really enjoyed the chickpea fritters. The tapenade was really nice touch and added a nice briny salt flavor to the fritters.
All of the dishes were hearty and I wasn’t hungry an hour later. They were also healthily prepared. Most of the dishes were around 500 calories.
Now some of you might find it strange that I was happy that one of my meals spoiled. I likely pushed the time limits on freshness and the meat was off. However, I was glad to see that no preservatives are used in their food and this proved it. Food SHOULD spoil. And thumbs up to Cooked who immediately offered to replace my meal.
Overall, I really liked Cooked. The meals had a lot of flavor and were very filling. I loved the local and season ingredients used. I would recommend these to anyone who doesn’t cook and is looking for high quality meal delivery or someone looking to help them get on track with eating clean whole food.
