Why get your toes wet when you can just jump in the pool feet first? I pondered this thought frequently during Bay to Breakers, my first footrace in 2 years. Bay to Breakers is the oldest consecutively run annual footrace in the world held in San Francisco. Yep, I chose a challenging 12K (7.5 mile) “race” with killer hills in San Francisco as my first “running” race in 2 year. In full disclosure, I walked-ran the race. I’m working my way back up to running a 5K continually and I’m on week two of the Couch to 5K program.
Regardless of my fitness level, I gave it my all and had a great time doing it. Bay to Breakers is a race like no other with costumes, nakedness, and bit of debauchery. Fun? Yes. Difficult? Yes. Would I do it again? Oh, Hell YES. I may have recorded a personal worst time wise but, I recorded a personal MOST FUN EVER experience wise.
Parties lined the streets of San Francisco keeping my energy high.
Marching bands as well as costumes or a lack there of (and all I can think is ouch…chafing) kept the race course interesting.
And in-between all the partying there was Hayes Hill.. a torturous mound of land that got my caves screaming and heart pumping.
But I have to say the best part of the race was the finish line. Seeing the breakers is seeing a whole new side of San Francisco. And finishing my first race in two years was a real accomplishment. I was tired but invigorated. I finished, and it felt awesome!
